Puzzles for Kids and why they love them

Kids and Puzzles seem to go naturally together. Almost all of us grow up with kid puzzles around the house and some of our earliest memories involve fitting puzzle pieces together.
Solving puzzles is a fun activity and Children start enjoying puzzles as early as 1 year old fitting pieces of a certain shape into the corresponding holes. Materials for this type of children's puzzles vary from wood to plastic.
By age 3, children can solve more complex tray puzzles with 10 to 20 pieces. These puzzles tend to have a tray into which the puzzle pieces fit. The pieces are generally cut into objects with the objective of match the object piece with a similarly shaped hole. Next comes puzzles with interlocking shapes. My 5 year old can quite easily now complete a puzzle of 30 pieces or more.
Different kid puzzles appeal to different kinds of children depending on their age and preference although most enjoy more than one type of kid's puzzles. As the kids grow older, they move on to jigsaw puzzles that form attractive images that appeal to children.

Puzzles for Kids: Food for the Brain

Puzzles are one of the great pleasures of life when you are young. They represent a test of abilities, a mystery to be solved, a new challenge to be conquered. Puzzles stimulate minds, challenging kids to think in new ways and engrossing them for long chunks of time. With such a wide range of benefits to your child, its no wonder that all children love puzzles.
Exercise for the Brain
Think of puzzles as a workout for your child's brain. Children are forced to concentrate on the task at hand, both observing individual pieces and the puzzle as a whole. Kids learn to process information, strengthening problem-solving skills and applying their solutions. Puzzles make use of hand eye coordination and fine motor skills as kids manipulate puzzle pieces; organization as they sort puzzle pieces; spatial perception as they fit pieces together. Puzzles are a stimulating form of tactile play, completely engaging children and using many senses.
Satisfaction
Regardless of age, kids gain a real sense of satisfaction and pride from a completed puzzle. As children take on increasingly difficult puzzles, mastering new skills and building on others, they gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. Puzzles foster greater self-esteem and a feeling of accomplishment.
Social Skills
Puzzles frequently are social activities. Young children complete puzzles together as a form of cooperative play, while older children work together to complete more complicated puzzles. This interaction is a great source of social development. Kids learn how to share pieces with each other, how to cooperate to reach their goal, how to help one another, how to handle frustration when a piece doesn't fit. Completing the puzzle acts as positive reinforcement, encouraging the behavior and making it easier for kids to repeat the good behavior.
Family Time
Puzzles are an ideal activity for family time. Puzzles give us a chance to spend some quiet, quality time with our kids, engrossed in a constructive activity that kids of any age can enjoy. Children get the social benefits of a group activity, as well as benefiting from valuable time with Mom or Dad.
Helping Kids Benefit From Puzzles
There are a few ways we can help young kids really benefit from puzzles:
1. Young kids need to see the whole picture before you start working on the puzzle. If you are working on a simple jigsaw puzzle, make sure they see a picture of the entire puzzle before you start working on it. If you are working on a wooden puzzle or shape sorter, let kids see what the puzzle looks like before you take the pieces out.
2.Talk about the pieces to younger children. Ask about the colors, patterns or lines on the pieces. This helps kids with pattern recognition and matching pieces together.
3.Try not to do it for your little one so they get the resulting sense of achievement. Encourage kids to wiggle the piece a little or try turning it to fit it into the puzzle.
4.Try starting the puzzle with a corner piece, since they are easier to distinguish from other pieces.
Subtly put a few connecting pieces closer to your child, so she can have the satisfaction of putting the correct pieces together. Sometimes this is all it takes to get them started or help them focus if they are getting frustrated.
Puzzles provide a great mental work out for kids, hidden in a fun and entertaining game. No other playtime activity offers quite as many cognitive and developmental benefits as puzzles.

My son was around 21 months when he knew his capital letters really well. At about two, I bought this puzzle, so he could learn the lowercase as well. Much to my surprise, he not only learned the lowercase letters quickly after playing the puzzle, but he quickly learned how to say all the pictures below the pieces, and says those words when he is doing another alphabet puzzle I have which has no pictures on it. Well worth the price I paid for the hours we have played with them over the last month.
